Work through these five categories and nothing important slips through the cracks. Start with the government essentials, then money, then everything else.

Order of operations: file USPS forwarding first (it catches anything you miss), then your driver's license, then banks and insurance, then subscriptions and everyone else.

📮 Mail & federal Do first

USPS forwarding is your safety net — it catches mail for 12 months while you update everyone individually.

File a USPS change of addressFile at usps.com or in person at a post office at least a week before you move. Online filing includes a small identity-verification fee; in-person is free. Choose a start date on or just before moving day.
Notify the IRSFile Form 8822 (Change of Address) so tax notices and refunds find you. It takes a few weeks to process — don't wait until April.
Update Social Security (if you receive benefits)Update your address through your my Social Security account or by phone.

🪪 State & civic Within 30 days

Most states legally require a license address update within 30 days of moving — check your new state's DMV site for the exact deadline.

Driver's license / state IDUpdate at your new state's DMV — many allow it online. Bring proof of the new address (lease, utility bill).
Vehicle registrationOften handled in the same DMV visit as the license. New plates may be required if you changed states.
Voter registrationUpdate online in most states in a few minutes. Do it early — registration deadlines precede elections by weeks.

💳 Money & insurance High priority

Miss these and statements, cards, and claims go to strangers. Update them the week you move.

Banks & credit unionsUpdate checking, savings, and any linked accounts. Order new checks if you still use them.
Credit cardsUpdate each issuer — replacement cards and statements follow the address on file.
Renters or homeowners insuranceStart a policy for the new place effective on move-in day; your rate may change with the new ZIP code.
Auto insuranceRates are ZIP-code based — update promptly so your coverage stays valid.
Employer / payrollUpdate your address with HR so W-2s, pay stubs, and benefits mail arrive correctly. State tax withholding may change too.
Investment & retirement accountsBrokerages, 401(k) providers, and any 529 or HSA accounts.

🏥 Health & family Don't forget

Doctors, dentists & specialistsUpdate your address and request records transfers if you're switching providers.
PharmacyTransfer prescriptions to a pharmacy near the new place before you run out.
Schools & childcareEnroll at the new school and transfer records; update emergency contacts everywhere.
VeterinarianTransfer pet records and update microchip registration with the new address.

📦 Subscriptions & everyone else Sweep

Streaming & membershipsUpdate billing addresses on streaming, music, gym, and warehouse-club memberships.
Online shopping accountsUpdate the default shipping address on Amazon and other stores — future-you will thank present-you.
Magazines & subscription boxesThese are the #1 thing people forget. Update each sender directly.
Friends & familySend one group message with the new address — holiday cards depend on it.

Watch out for address-change scams. Only file USPS changes at usps.com or in person. Third-party sites charge inflated fees for the same form — the official process is quick and cheap.
